Study Spots

February 22, 2024 by David Vance

The Grand Reading Room

The Grand Reading Room on Thompson’s second floor offers a serene and traditional study environment, perfect for those who prefer a quiet environment. With ample table space and a view overlooking the Oval, studying here is a truly tranquil experience. Plus, the presence of the Nike of Samothrace sculpture adds a touch of artistic beauty to the ambiance.

Fireplace Lounges at the Union

Featuring comfortable seating arrangements around a central fireplace, these lounges offer a warm and relaxed atmosphere for socializing, studying, or unwinding. With a blend of modern and traditional decor, they provide a serene retreat amidst the campus hustle, perfect for students and visitors alike.

The Orton Library

Situated in one of campus’s most historic buildings, the Orton Memorial Library of Geology provides students the perfect study environment to fully immerse themselves in their studies. As the oldest library, this place provides a quiet and traditional study space.

11th floor of Thompson Library

Grab a friend and enjoy the sights. With panoramic views of the campus and city skyline, the floor offers individual and group study tables coupled with lounge or rocking chairs. You have to try this place around sunset to catch the last moments of sunshine rays.

18th Avenue Library

One of the main libraries, this study spot is open 24 hours Monday-Friday, making it perfect for late-night cram sessions. In addition, the first floor is fully equipped with computers for public use while its third floor is a research commons. Lastly, it boasts of the amazing Berry Cafe with fruit smoothies that I highly recommend.

Browning Amphitheater

When not in use, the amphitheater offers a picturesque view of Mirror Lake for studying students. The semicircular design and tiered seating afford plenty of space for a group study session or a picnic lunch.

Mirror Lake

A popular study spot by students to catch some much-needed sun rays, Mirror Lake boasts an incredible view and a beautiful central fountain. In addition, the Mirror Lake Eatery contains some of the world’s best fried chicken and milkshakes (the author may be a bit biased).

RPAC

Wait, isn’t this place a gym? Not only is it one of the largest fitness centers in the US, but it also contains its very own study spots. Attached to the lobby is a series of large steps that students have claimed for their own. In addition, the second floor holds some isolated tables for studying as well.
