Letter to Distance Eductation
students from D’Arcy :
This letter is intended to
do three things:
1)
remind you this is a distance education, web-based
course
2)
Give you an idea of the technical minimal
requirements for a computer used to take this course
3)
Give advice about how to configure email, as very
important information will be communicated to you via your OSU email account.
Distance education:
Because this is a distance education, it is important
students understand a couple of important things. One, students in distance
education classes must take responsibility for keeping up with the work. Two,
they must check email often. Three, they must have access to a computer system
that can handle the course.
We in EPL 259 try to keep the deadlines solid. This means
that students need to stay aware of the calendar and of due dates so as to
avoid reduced grades. We maintain a listserv for EPL 259 distance students (I
put your email on this list, so no action is necessary by you to get on the
list). Email your instructor or me (oaks.9@osu.edu)
with questions.
Minimum requirements for computer systems engaged in
distance learning, as listed by “TELR”:
OSU’s TELR (“Technology Enhanced Learning and Research”)
recommends the following for minimum requirements of a computer system engaged
in distance learning:
Pentium-based
computer or equivalent (e.g., Celeron or AMD-K6) with a 333 Mhz or higher processor; 64 MB or better RAM; and 500
MB available hard disk space.
G3,
iMac, or better; MacOS 8.6 or higher; 64 MB or better
RAM; and 500 MB available hard disk space. You also must have Open Transport installed for Internet
connections. If you're using a modem, you will need Remote Access installed as
well.
