Subject: EPL 259D - week
3b
Hello everyone,
Portfolio 3, which is due on Monday,
October 12th, requires you to assemble
five daily "To Do Checklists" of all
of your academic assignments (for all
your courses) for the week. Each list
must contain at least three items.
Don't include non-academic
tasks.
Each task should start with a verb that is specific and results in
a
measurable goal (e.g. read, memorize, review, complete. Do not
use
non-specific verbs like study or start. These words are ambiguous and
assist
us in rationalizing ineffective behavior.
Making tasks specific
and measurable is important, because people who set
goals that are specific
and measurable get more done. It's easy to kid
ourselves when we set goals
like "study"; that can mean we've got our book
on our laps while we watch TV.
A task that is "specific and measurable" can
be easily visualized, and you
can easily tell when you are finished.
Setting yourself clear, active tasks
that require you to produce results
will keep you from wasting time and
having to do the same thing over and
over again because you didn't really do
it well the first time. There is an
art to making a good to-do list, and this
assignment gives you a chance to
practice it.
The next couple weeks of
this course are about attitudes for success. They
are also quite busy weeks,
so resist your urge to procrastinate. As you
continue to read about the
strategies, bear in mind that they are based on
research into the
characteristics of people who have been successful in
getting what they want
for their lives. These strategies work, and not just
for school.
Hope
you have a good week-end.
Rick
